BLIND WOMAN “SEES” DURING NDE
Born prematurely, Vicki Umipeg, of Seattle, Wash, received too much oxygen in the hospital incubator, resulting in damage to the optic nerve and complete blindness. On February 2, 1973, at age 22, she suffered serious injuries in an auto accident and underwent a near-death experience during which she was able to see. Although her recollection of the accident scene is very limited, she does recall a brief glimpse of the smashed vehicle in which she had been a passenger. Her first clear recollection is of the operating room. She found herself up on the ceiling while watching the surgeons work on her at Harborview Hospital. “…“I perceived that I was up on the ceiling, and I thought, ‘well, that’s kind of weird. What am I doing up here?’ …I just briefly saw this body, and…I knew it was mine because I wasn’t in mine. Then I was just away from it. It was that quick.” Umipeg further recalled hearing one of the doctors talking about her and knowing what he was going to say before he said it. One of the doctors commented that she could end up deaf as well as blind. After the surgery, she asked about this and it was confirmed that she had blood on her left eardrum and there was concern about deafness. She also heard a female doctor or nurse comment about the possibility of her coming out of it in a vegetative state. At that point she “floated down” and tried to grab the right arm of the woman, but found that her hand went right through her. She then found herself going up through the ceiling and the roof of the hospital, at which point she had a panoramic view of her surroundings. She then recalled going through a dark tunnel and finding herself in a place of great light. “Everybody there was made of light. And I was made of light,” she later reported. “What the light conveyed was love.” She was welcomed by two old schoolmates who had died at young ages, a couple who had cared for her during her youth, and her grandmother. The two old classmates had been blind and retarded when alive, but they were now fully grown “in their prime,” and with no handicaps. Umipeg recalls feeling overcome with a sense of total knowledge. “I had a feeling I knew everything…and like everything made sense.” She then saw a figure whose radiance was far greater than the illumination of all others. She recognized the “radiance” as Jesus. Telepathically, Jesus communicated to her that she must return to her physical body. She didn’t want to return but was assured by Jesus that she would come back. In the mean time, she had to return to “learn and teach more about love and forgiving.” – Michael E. Tymn
